Final Sale
Traditional blue-and-white pottery first came to England from China on the ships of the East India Company. In the 1780s, when imports became scarce, Josiah Spode perfected the process of blue underglaze printing at his Staffordshire, England factory to satisfy the demand for these elegant wares. Shortly after, Spode introduced Blue Willow earthenware, a pattern that would become one of the most beloved and most avidly collected in history. Legend has it that the pattern tells a story of young lovers who risk everything to be together, meet a tragic end and are transformed by love (or perhaps by the gods) into a pair of soaring birds. Whether the pattern was designed to tell the story, or the story invented to explain the pattern doesn't matter; the romantic images of Willow have charmed for more than two centuries. And, because Willow has been in continuous production at the same factory since 1790, collectors are able to add new pieces to those that have been passed down through generations.
